Wither weather? Whither, whether?

I admit it. Ruth was right. For reasons she can’t explain and I can’t understand, Ruth’s wish to circumnavigate Europe by means of a double helix, figure of 8 route heading first East (to Poland) then North (to the North Cape) then West (to the U of K) then South-East (to Turkey – supposing we get there) has meant that we have largely missed – barring some heavy rain in Finland, which we outran, some downpours in Slovenia, which at least were warm and an abrupt end to the Balkan summer resulting in temperatures 10°C below the normal - the evidently crap summer that most of our readers enjoyed (!) since our departure from Britain in April. I say “evidently”. The reason I write thus is that perusal of the 3 or 4 English-language newspapers we have seen since then, scouring websites and blogs and the few conversations we have had with people who were in Western Europe when we weren’t, all assent to the conclusion that the weather has been malignantly dreadful. Personally our summer has been hot and sunny. Seldom have either of us worn so few clothes of such brevity for so long. We thought you might need to know this before the nights draw in with a vengeance and you realise that there are another six months to go before conditions are this good again.

Be of good cheer:-

1. We have 6 months to go and much could yet turn to our disadvantage
2. We are in an earthquake zone and might be about to receive our comeuppance (and godownance).
