Kaali Lake - The Sun's Grave

Incredible sight - this huge hole that wiped out Saaremaa Island about 3500 years ago - it was witnessed by humans and has entered legend.

Hi there. Good to catch up with all the places and pictures! You have really 'travelled' both inside and out methinks!
The monument to the death camp in the forest looked incredible...the ferry looked less so. What's the story behind the Kaali Lake then?

According to a theory first proposed by Lennart Meri, it is possible that Saaremaa was the legendary Thule island, first mentioned by ancient Greek geographer Pytheas, whereas the name "Thule" could have been connected to the Finnic word tule ("(of) fire") and the folklore of Estonia, which depicts the birth of the crater lake in Kaali. Kaali was considered the place where "The sun went to rest. Of course, 'Thule' could be the car roof bars sold (expensively) by Halfords and which pre-date the meteor which broke into fragments before striking Kaali at a speed of 20km/sec. Which is very fast. Apparently.

Interesting! I wonder if the Thule society place this within their claims concerning the origins of the Aryan race. "The term "Ultima Thule" ((Latin): most distant Thule) is also mentioned by the Roman poet Virgil in his epic poem Aeneid. This was supposed to be the far northern segment of Thule and is now generally understood to mean Scandinavia."

You can see by the link that the Thule society are fixated with Occult and esoteric symbolism including those of the Hindu belief systems (Hence the possible origins of the swastika)
Hope all is well there Mum and John, I have to say I miss you loads and am totally jealous. Very interested with the places you are visiting, it seems like a true adventure and is inspiring!
