DONT GO DOWN TO THE EDGE OF TOWN - BEAR WARNING

EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES

The guidebook warns that Bucharest is afflicted with packs of stray dogs. We noticed them at several places in Romania. The current PC description for them is “community dogs”. By extension, Ruth and I have talked of other pests like “community cats” and even “community wasps”. You might recall that Ruth has an ambivalent attitude to bears. She wants to see some in the wild, but not when they are wild. We have hoped/feared to see them in Poland, Finland, Sweden, Croatia, Bosnia and here in Bulgaria which has Europe’s largest population. When we were in Romania, site-seeing King Carol I’s kitsch castle at Sinaia, we noted that the surrounding woods were decorated with notices warning of possible bear attacks. Helpfully, the notices showed photos of bears, in case you didn’t recognise them and did the Wrong Thing.

Note that the sign says ,"Zone frequented by bears. The bear is an unpredictable animal." We guessed that.
